This couplet serves as the moral pivot of the story about the desert Arab who brings a jug of rainwater to the Caliph in Baghdad. The Arab, coming from a place of scarcity, believes his gift is precious. He is unaware that the Caliph's city is built on the banks of the mighty Tigris river, an immense source of fresh water. Rumi uses this story as an allegory for the human spiritual condition.
Our ordinary senses (ḥisshā) and rational understanding (idrākāt) are the equivalent of the Arab's jug of water. We treasure them, believing they give us a true picture of reality. However, when brought before the divine presence—the 'Caliph'—they are revealed to be infinitesimally small. They are but a single drop compared to the 'river of purity' (nahr-i ṣafā), which represents the boundless ocean of divine knowledge, direct spiritual insight, and unfiltered reality that the saints and prophets experience.
