The vizier, who is in a spiritual retreat, finally speaks from inside his cell to the followers gathered outside, preparing to deliver a message to them.
This couplet marks a pivotal moment in the story. The devious vizier, having successfully established himself as a Christian ascetic, has locked himself away in a forty-day spiritual retreat (khalwat). His devoted followers, new converts to this purified form of Christianity, have been waiting eagerly outside his cell. The tension has been building, and now, finally, a voice emerges from within.
The phrase "from deep inside" (az andarūn) is significant. On a literal level, it means he is speaking from within his physical seclusion. On a spiritual level, it mimics the language of mystical revelation, where truth emerges from an inner, unseen source. The vizier is carefully stage-managing this moment to sound like a genuine spiritual master receiving a divine command that he must now transmit to his flock.
This beyt serves as a formal proclamation, setting the stage for the dramatic and (deceptively) holy instructions that follow. He is about to tell them that Jesus has commanded him to withdraw from the world completely, a message designed to cement his saintly reputation and ensure his plot continues without his direct involvement.
- Within, inside. In Sufi contexts, it often refers to the inner self or the spiritual interior, as opposed to the external world or outward appearance (birūn).
- Disciples, followers, aspirants. The plural of murīd, a technical term in Sufism for a novice who has committed to a spiritual guide (a murshid or pīr) on the path to God.
- Let it be known; be it known. An archaic, formal phrase used to introduce an important declaration or piece of information.
