M4:76

To truly see the beloved's beauty, you must stop looking with your own eyes and instead borrow the perspective of a true lover.
This couplet is the core instruction in a passage about perception. Rumi has just argued that the same person or thing can appear evil to one and divine to another (M4:71–72). The value is not inherent in the object but in the eye of the beholder. To see the true worth of the 'beloved'—whether a person, a spiritual guide, or God—one cannot rely on one's own ordinary, jaded perception, which is prone to boredom and disillusionment (sīrī va malāl, M4:77).
Instead, Rumi says, one must perform an act of profound empathy and spiritual borrowing: adopt the vision of those already consumed by love (ʿishq). This is not a metaphor for asking their opinion, but for a radical shift in one's own faculty of sight. By looking 'with the lover's eye,' one sees the beloved as the lover does: eternally fresh, captivating, and perfect. This borrowed vision is the antidote to the ego's critical and fickle gaze, allowing one to access a divine perspective where what seemed undesirable reveals itself as a path to the ultimate good.
- عاریت
- ʿāriyat: A loan, something borrowed. In Sufi contexts, it often refers to borrowing a spiritual quality or faculty, like perception or life, from a divine source or a perfected guide.
- نظر
- naẓar: Sight, gaze, look, or perspective. It implies more than just physical vision; it includes the inner act of seeing, perception, and spiritual insight.
- نگر
- negar: The imperative form of the verb 'to look' or 'to behold' (negarestan). It carries a sense of focused, contemplative gazing, not just a casual glance.
