The spiritual guide's influence radiates silently, and it is this inner glory, not verbal argument, that empowers all true eloquence.
This couplet is the culmination of an analogy comparing spiritual beings to a garden in springtime. Rumi has just described how trees and flowers express their profound gratitude for water and sun not with words, but through their vibrant, flourishing existence. They are 'silent, yet eloquent' (khāmushān... faṣīḥ).
Here, Rumi applies this principle directly to the spiritual guide—the Prophet Muhammad or the perfected saint (insān al-kāmil). This guide is 'our moon' (māh-i mā), a source of reflected divine light that illuminates the world. His essential influence is not through what he says (bī-noṭq, 'without speech'), but through his state of being, his radiant presence. This presence, or spiritual splendor (farr), is the true source from which all meaningful speech and articulation derive their power. Just as Jesus's speech was a gift from Mary's silent purity (as the next couplet states), all authentic expression flows from the silent, luminous reality of the spiritual master.
- فر
- An ancient Persian concept of divine glory, splendor, or kingly aura. It signifies a charismatic, sacred power that emanates from a person, legitimizing their authority and inspiring others.
- نطق
- Speech, articulation, the faculty of reasoned discourse. In this context, it refers not just to talking but to eloquent and meaningful expression.
- ماه ما
- Literally 'our moon'. In Sufi poetry, the moon is a common symbol for the spiritual guide or Prophet, who reflects the light of the divine 'sun' for humanity.
- بر تافتست
- Has shone, has radiated. An archaic verb form of 'bar tāftan', to shine forth or radiate light and heat.
