M1:1557 — گفت طوطی را چه خواهی ارمغان / کارمت از خطهٔ هندوستان

این بیت لحظه‌ای کلیدی در داستان «بازرگان و طوطی» است. بازرگان که عازم سفری تجاری به هندوستان است، از روی بخشندگی و محبت، از همهٔ اهل خانه، از جمله کنیزان و غلامانش، می‌پرسد که چه سوغاتی برایشان بیاورد. او این پرسش را از طوطی‌اش نیز، که در قفس زندانی است، تکرار می‌کند.

این سؤال ساده، مقدمه‌ای برای درخواست غیرمنتظرهٔ طوطی است. برخلاف دیگران که کالایی مادی می‌خواهند، طوطی پیامی معنوی برای هم‌نوعان آزاد خود در هندوستان می‌فرستد. این بیت، تقابل میان دنیای مادی (که با «ارمغان» و تجارت بازرگان نمایندگی می‌شود) و دنیای روح (که در اشتیاق طوطی برای رهایی و ارتباط با اصل خود نهفته است) را پایه‌ریزی می‌کند. پرسش بازرگان، گرچه از سر لطف است، اما نشان‌دهندهٔ بی‌خبری او از رنج عمیق طوطی و اشتیاق او به آزادی است.

This couplet marks a pivotal turn in the story. After dealing with his human household, the merchant extends the same courtesy to his prized parrot. The question, while seemingly simple and kind, sets the entire spiritual drama in motion. It establishes the parrot not merely as a pet, but as a being with desires and a voice.

The specific destination, India (Hindustan), is crucial. For a caged parrot, India is not just a geographical location but its vaṭan-e aṣlī, its original homeland—the place of freedom, community, and authentic existence. The merchant's question, therefore, is unintentionally profound: he is asking a captive soul what it wants from the land of its own lost liberty. This transforms a mundane inquiry about a souvenir into a catalyst for a message about the soul's deep yearning for its source.
