When someone receives a spiritual insight but fails to be grateful, that very ingratitude destroys their ability to perceive such truths in the future.
This couplet concludes a short allegory about the nature of spiritual perception, prompted by the story of a jealous vizier. In the preceding verses (M1:445–446), Rumi establishes the "nose" (bīnī) as a metaphor for the soul's faculty of spiritual intuition—the ability to catch the "scent" (būy) of divine reality. A person without this scent is spiritually "noseless."
Here, Rumi diagnoses how this faculty is lost. The vizier had an opportunity for insight; he "caught a scent." This could have been a moment of clarity, a brush with truth, or an encounter with a person of God. However, instead of responding with gratitude (shukr), he reacted with envy and denial. Rumi identifies this failure as kufr-i niʿmat (ingratitude for a blessing), a grave spiritual error in Islamic ethics. The consequence is immediate and devastating: the ingratitude itself acts like a corrosive force, "eating" or destroying the very organ of perception. The vizier's inability to appreciate the blessing renders him incapable of ever perceiving one again.
The verse serves as a universal warning: spiritual gifts are not entitlements. They are sustained by gratitude and destroyed by the arrogance, envy, or heedlessness that constitutes ingratitude. To lose the "nose" is to be cut off from the scents of the divine world, left only with the stench of one's own ego.
- Kufr-i niʿmat. A key term in Islamic ethics meaning "ingratitude for a blessing." It frames ingratitude not just as a social failing but as an act of spiritual "disbelief" or "covering over" of a divine gift, which carries severe consequences.
- Bīnī. Literally "nose." In this specific context, Rumi uses it as a metaphor for the faculty of spiritual perception or intuition—the soul's ability to sense divine realities.
- Būy-ī. Literally "a scent" or "a fragrance." Here, it signifies a spiritual intimation, a subtle sign, or a momentary awareness of a higher reality.
- Shukr. Gratitude, thankfulness. In Sufism, it is not merely a verbal expression but an active state of recognizing and honoring the divine source of all blessings, which in turn attracts more blessings.
