Translation & meaning
Translation: Like Isma'il, lay your head before Him; Joyful and laughing, give your soul before His blade.
Meaning: This verse urges absolute and unconditional surrender to the divine command, exemplified by the story of Isma'il's sacrifice, where the devotee joyfully and willingly offers their life to God's will.
Explanation
In the realm of gnosis and spiritual journey, a fundamental question persistently arises: How do we recognize that divine hand, that sword of truth, before which unconditional submission is due? Who genuinely executes the will of the Divine, such that every act, however outwardly painful, can be deemed righteous? To address this profound query, Mowlana refers to two pivotal Quranic narratives: the story of Khidr and Moses, and that of Abraham and Isma'il. This particular verse draws our hearts directly to the tale of Abraham and Isma'il.
Mowlana posits that one who claims to be the hand or eye of God makes a mighty assertion. Yet, if that claim holds true, if an individual is truly a divine agent, then every action—even the taking of a life—will be just. The core challenge, however, lies in discerning this truth. This verse instructs us that in the face of such a command, there is no path but absolute surrender. It commands: “Like Isma'il, lay your head before Him; Joyful and laughing, give your soul before His blade.”
A subtle yet significant point here is Mowlana's consistent use of Isma'il as the sacrificial figure in the Masnavi, while Judeo-Christian traditions typically name Isaac. Interestingly, in his Divan-e Shams, Mowlana also invokes Isaac, stating: “I am bound by Your command / Isaac, I am Your sacrifice.” This suggests that for Mowlana, the identity of the sacrificed was less crucial than the profound principle of surrender to the divine will and the readiness for self-sacrifice. Or perhaps he entertained the possibility of both narratives being valid, given the Quran's non-explicit naming of the son.
This surrender, crucially, is one accompanied by joy and laughter, not by compulsion or reluctance. As the following verse articulates: “So that your soul remains eternally joyful / Like the pure soul of Ahmad with the One.” This implies that such submission leads to eternal life and an everlasting union with the Divine. Mowlana describes this exalted station thus: “Lovers then drink the wine of life / When their Beloveds take their lives with their own hands.” This signifies that the highest echelon of union and felicity is attained when the Beloved personally seizes the soul of the lover, accepting them as a sacrifice.
Mowlana rejects ill-suspicion and resistance to divine command, asserting: “The King did not shed that blood out of lust / Cast aside your ill-suspicion and contention.” This divine act, or the act of the divine agent, is not motivated by carnal desire or worldly aims but originates from pure wisdom and immaculate clarity. “How can impurity take hold in His purity?” meaning that in the realm of absolute purity, blemish and doubt have no entry. It is here that Mowlana delves into the wisdom of suffering and asceticism in the world, illustrating how many pains and trials, even when their underlying wisdom is obscured from us, contain divine sagacity and purifying power—much like a broken limb or a severe illness, each of which can unlock a deeper understanding of existence.
Key takeaways
- The core of this verse is absolute and unconditional surrender to the Divine Will.
- This surrender is accompanied by joy and laughter, not reluctance, as it leads to eternal union and persistence.
- The story of Isma'il (or Isaac) serves as the supreme paradigm for such sacrifice and contentment with God's command.
- Divine action stems from pure wisdom, not desire or worldly motives; ill-suspicion originates from our human perspective.
- The wisdom behind sufferings and tribulations in the world, even if hidden, leads to purification and deeper gnosis.

This verse calls for absolute and unconditional surrender to the divine command, using the story of Isma'il's sacrifice as the model for joyfully and willingly offering one's life to God's will.
To justify the physician's killing of the goldsmith, Rumi draws on two key Quranic stories: Khidr and Moses, and Abraham and Isma'il. This couplet specifically invokes the latter, presenting Isma'il's submission as the supreme model for how one should respond to a true divine command, even one that demands the ultimate sacrifice.
The core instruction is to surrender absolutely. When an individual is genuinely acting as God's agent—a 'hand of God,' as the previous verse states—their actions, no matter how outwardly destructive, are righteous. The challenge is recognizing such an agent, but once recognized, the only proper response is total submission. This is not a reluctant or coerced act but one performed with joy and laughter ('shād o khandān'). The willingness to die at the Beloved's hand is the highest station for the lover, as it leads not to annihilation but to eternal, joyful union with the Divine, as the subsequent verses clarify.
Rumi uses this powerful image to counter the reader's potential 'ill-suspicion' ('bad-gumānī') that the king in the story acted from lust or base motives. The act, like Abraham's, was an expression of pure, divine wisdom, free from the contamination of personal desire. Just as trials and suffering in life serve a purifying purpose, this seemingly cruel act was a form of spiritual alchemy, intended to refine and elevate.

- Isma'il (Ishmael): In the Islamic tradition, the son whom Abraham was commanded by God to sacrifice. He is the archetype of perfect submission and willing self-sacrifice in the face of a divine command.
- Ismael.
