M4:3702 — سرنگونی آن بود کو سوی زیر / می‌رود پندارد او کو هست چیر

This beyt comes in a section where Rumi is cautioning against intellectual pride and the illusion of understanding divine essence. The preceding verses warn against delving too deeply into the nature of God, suggesting that such intellectualizing is often a projection of one's own limited imagination, veiled by countless 'curtains' (M4:3698-3699). The Prophet Muhammad, Rumi states, sought to dispel this delusion (M4:3700). Those who persist in such 'improper speculation' (M4:3701) are given 'downfall' by God. This couplet then defines that downfall: it's not merely a fall, but a delusional fall. The individual is moving 'suy-e zir' (سوی زیر – towards the bottom, downwards), yet in their arrogance, they 'pendarad u ku hast chir' (پندارد او کو هست چیر – imagine they are supreme, victorious, or rising). It's a state of being utterly lost while convinced of one's own enlightenment, a spiritual intoxication where one cannot distinguish 'heaven from earth' (M4:3703). Rumi emphasizes that true understanding begins with recognizing one's limits, not by attempting to grasp the incomprehensible essence of the Creator.
