Asking the Lord, Bestower of Grace, for the grace of courtesy in all states, and explaining the gravity of the harms of discourtesy
From God we seek the grace of right conduct, for the one without it is deprived of the Lord's favor. We must ask God for the ability to act with proper reverence (adab), because those who lack it are cut off from divine grace and blessings. ❋
The irreverent one brought ruin not to himself alone;Rather, he set fire to all horizons. An act of discourtesy or impropriety does not merely harm the individual responsible; its destructive consequences spread like a fire, causing corruption and misfortune throughout the world. ❋
A table from the heavens would descend, without a purchase, sale, or word exchanged. This couplet describes the divine sustenance that came directly from heaven, freely given without any need for human effort, commerce, or negotiation. ❋
Among the tribe of Moses, certain menimpudently demanded, “Where are the garlic and lentils?”This verse refers to the story of the Israelites who, despite receiving heavenly food (manna and quail), ungratefully demanded common, earthly sustenance. ❋
The celestial table and bread were severed from the sky,And the toil of sowing, spade, and sickle remained for us.Because the people of Moses showed impatience and disrespect, their effortless divine sustenance was taken away, forcing them to return to the hard labor of farming and worldly struggle. ❋
When Jesus then interceded with the Truth,He sent a table down, a bounty on a tray. This verse refers to the Quranic story where, after the heavenly table was withdrawn due to the ingratitude of Moses's people, Jesus interceded and God mercifully sent down His table of blessings once more. ❋
A table from the sky was sent again as a gift, because he prayed, “Send down upon us a table.”When Jesus prayed for it, God once again sent down a heavenly feast, directly quoting the Quranic prayer to show the power of respectful supplication.
Again the insolent abandoned all propriety, and like beggars, they gathered up the scraps. This verse describes how the impudent, despite receiving divine sustenance again, showed ingratitude by treating the heavenly gift as mere leftovers. ❋
Jesus pleaded with them, saying, 'This is eternal, and from the earth it shall never diminish.'Jesus implored his avaricious followers, assuring them that the divine sustenance was a permanent gift and there was no need to hoard it out of fear that it would run out. ❋
To harbor ill-suspicion and act with greedis disbelief before the table of a great Lord.To mistrust God's boundless generosity or to hoard His blessings out of avarice is a form of ingratitude and disbelief in the face of His majesty. ❋
Because of those beggar-faced ones, never sated by greed, that door of mercy was closed fast upon them. This couplet states that the insatiable greed and ingratitude of certain people caused God's mercy and blessings to be withdrawn from them. ❋
For withholding alms, the clouds will not ascend,And from lewdness, plagues on every side descend. This couplet states that moral transgressions against divine law, such as failing to pay the obligatory alms or engaging in illicit sexual acts, directly cause cosmic and social disasters like drought and epidemics. ❋
Whatever comes to you of darkness and of grief,Is from your own audacity and insolent belief.Any suffering, sorrow, or spiritual darkness you experience is a direct result of your own impropriety and recklessness before God; your wrongful actions summon these calamities. ❋
Whoever acts recklessly on the pathway of the FriendBecomes a brigand to true men, and is himself ignoble. This verse warns that irreverence and audacity on the spiritual journey not only lead the individual astray but also obstruct the progress of others, proving that person unworthy of the path. ❋
Through reverence, this firmament is filled with light, and through reverence, the angel is innocent and bright.Reverence (*adab*) is the fundamental principle of cosmic order and beauty, causing the heavens to be radiant and rendering angels pure and infallible. ❋
Through impudence, the sun is made to eclipse;Through audacity, an Azazil is turned from the gate.Rumi asserts that impudence and audacity bring grave consequences, citing the solar eclipse and the expulsion of Azazil (Iblis) from God's presence as examples. ❋
