That man's request from Moses for the language of animals and birds
A young man came to Moses and declared,“Teach me the tongue that all the creatures share.”In this story, a young man asks the prophet Moses to grant him the supernatural ability to understand the language of animals.
So that from the cries of animals and beastsI might gain a lesson for my own faith. The young man tells Moses he wants to learn the language of animals to find spiritual lessons in their sounds, which he believes will be purer than human speech.
Since all the tongues of humankind are spentchasing after water, bread, and empty talk,The young man argues that human speech is entirely consumed by worldly concerns like sustenance and trivial chatter, implying that animal language might be more spiritually profound.
Perhaps the animals have a different kind of pain, stemming from their concerns as they pass through life. The man hopes that animals, unlike humans, are preoccupied with a nobler, more spiritual kind of suffering than the mere worldly anxieties of planning for survival.
Moses said, “Go, turn away from this obsession, for it holds great danger, in origin and conclusion.”The prophet Moses warns the man that his desire to know the language of animals is a dangerous whim that will lead to harm both now and in the future.
Seek your lesson, your awakening, from God alone, not from books, nor from speech, nor from letters and lips.In this couplet, Moses advises a man that true spiritual insight and awakening are gifts received directly from God, not knowledge that can be acquired through external sources like texts or the speech of others—even the speech of animals.
The man grew more inflamed by the prophet’s warning;from prohibition, a man’s desire is always burning. When Moses forbade the man from seeking the language of animals, it only made him more determined, because human nature is such that it craves what is forbidden.
He said, “O Moses, since your light has shone, every single thing has gained something from you.The man flatters Moses, arguing that since Moses's prophetic light benefits all of creation, he too should receive the specific gift he desires and not be left out.
To keep me from this wish, my heart's desire,Would not befit your grace, O Generous Sire. The man tells Moses that to deny him his request would be inconsistent with Moses's famously generous and gracious character.
Right now, you stand in the place of God Himself; To be refused by you would be despair. The man tells Moses that since Moses is God's representative on earth, being denied this wish by him would feel like being rejected by God, causing utter despair.
Moses said, “O Lord, this simple-hearted man—Has the accursed devil made a fool of him?”Seeing the man's stubborn insistence on a dangerous wish, Moses turns to God and asks if this seemingly good man has been deceived by Satan.
If I teach him, it will be to his ruin;if I do not, his heart will turn against me.Moses finds himself in a dilemma: teaching the man the language of animals will harm him, but refusing his insistent plea will make the man bitter and resentful.
God said, “O Moses, teach it to him, for Wehave never, out of Grace, turned back a plea.”In this couplet, God commands Moses to grant the man's persistent request, stating that Divine Grace does not refuse a sincere prayer, even if the outcome may be harmful to the supplicant.
He said, “O Lord, he will be consumed by regret,he will bite his hand and tear his clothes to shreds.”Moses protests to God, predicting that if this man gets what he wants, he will suffer such catastrophic regret that he will tear his clothes and bite his hands in despair.
Power is not suited to every person;helplessness is a better capital for the pious. Not everyone is equipped to handle power or special knowledge; for a person of faith, a sense of their own limitation and dependency is a much safer and more valuable asset.
For this reason poverty became an eternal source of pride:because the hand that cannot reach remains within piety's guide.Spiritual poverty is a virtue because powerlessness and need keep a person God-conscious and safe from the temptations that come with power.
From that wealth, from that affluence, he became an outcast, for with power, all patience was bid farewell and passed. The kind of wealth and power that destroys a person's patience is precisely what leads to their spiritual rejection.
For humankind, powerlessness and poverty are a sanctuaryfrom the calamity of a soul filled with greed and its anxieties.Human limitations and material want serve as a crucial defense, protecting people from the destructive disasters caused by their own greedy and insatiable ego.
That sorrow comes from meddlesome desires,to which the ghoul's own prey has grown accustomed. This man's suffering arises from his obsessive and unnecessary desires, habits that have made him captive to demonic, soul-destroying forces.
The clay-eater craves only clay;rose-petal jam will not agree with that poor wretch.A person whose nature is accustomed to base desires cannot digest or appreciate refined spiritual gifts.
