True lovers seek the entirety of existence, the Divine, not merely its transient manifestations; whoever fixes their desire on a partial aspect of reality will ultimately be separated from the complete truth.
This couplet introduces a crucial distinction between two types of lovers: those who seek the 'Whole' (کل) and those who are enamored by a 'part' (جزو). In Rumi's Sufi context, the 'Whole' refers to the absolute, undifferentiated Reality of God, the source of all existence. The 'part' refers to any created thing, any worldly pleasure, any fleeting phenomenon that derives its beauty or allure from the Divine but is not the Divine itself.
The preceding story, to which this beyt belongs, illustrates this point through the metaphor of a lover of a wall. The wall, illuminated by the sun, appears radiant and beautiful. The misguided lover, however, attributes this beauty to the wall itself, rather than to the sun that casts its light upon it. When the sun inevitably moves or sets, the wall loses its luster, and the lover is left with nothing but a dull, lifeless object. This is precisely the fate of one who becomes 'مشتاق جزو' – yearning for the part.
The couplet emphasizes that such a person 'ماند از کل' – remains apart from the Whole. They are deprived of the true source of beauty and joy because they have mistaken the reflection for the origin, the shadow for the substance. Rumi consistently urges his readers to look beyond the ephemeral forms of the world to the eternal essence that animates them, lest they find themselves eternally separated from the Beloved.
- کل
- The Whole; the totality of existence; the Absolute Reality, God.
- A part; a fragment; any created, temporal aspect of reality.
- Yearning, longing, desirous.
