This couplet renders the Prophet Muhammad's famous declaration at Ghadir Khumm, establishing a spiritual continuity between himself and his cousin, Ali.
Rumi directly quotes the Prophet Muhammad's declaration concerning Ali ibn Abi Talib, a pivotal moment in Islamic history known as the event of Ghadir Khumm. The section's title explains that this declaration angered hypocrites, who complained that after submitting to Muhammad, they were now being told to submit to his young cousin.
However, Rumi immediately re-frames the term mawlā (مولا), moving it from the political register of 'master' or 'leader' to the spiritual register of 'liberator'. The very next couplet asks, "Who is a mawlā? The one who sets you free / and removes the bonds of servitude from your feet." For Rumi, the Prophet's statement is not about dynastic succession but about the transmission of a spiritual authority whose function is to bring souls to freedom. Ali is designated as a guide who, like the Prophet, leads believers to the ultimate liberty found in God.
- A rich Arabic term with a wide semantic range including 'master', 'lord', 'patron', 'client', 'friend', and 'protector'. Its ambiguity is central to historical debates; Rumi interprets it here in its spiritual sense as a guide who liberates.
- Literally 'son of a paternal uncle'; cousin. Specifically refers to Ali ibn Abi Talib's relationship to the Prophet Muhammad.
