Translation & meaning
Translation: From adab (propriety/discipline), this firmament has become radiant; And from adab, the angel has arrived innocent and pure. Meaning: Mowlana articulates in this verse how adab is the fundamental principle of order and beauty in existence, causing the heavens to radiate light and rendering angels innocent and pure.
Explanation
Mowlana, within a profound and rich sequence of verses, speaks of adab (propriety, discipline, reverence) not merely as good conduct, but as the very backbone of existence. This verse explicitly reveals that adab is the foundation of radiance and purity in the cosmos. I have often stated that, in Mowlana's view, adab is neither superficial courtesy nor a mere ethical virtue; it is a cosmic and existential principle. Without this adab, the world would fall into disorder and be stripped of its light.
The firmament, this celestial sphere, has become radiant through adab. What does Mowlana mean by the 'adab of the firmament'? As I have noted before, I interpret this 'radiance through adab' as the humility and curvature of the sky. It is as if the heavens do not assert pride or arrogance; their back is bowed, like one who respectfully inclines their head. This curvature and obedience to the order of existence constitute the adab of the firmament, bestowing upon it radiance and beauty. This adab, in essence, is the acceptance of one's place in the order of creation and bowing before the Divine command, which illuminates the entire cosmos. Had the firmament also acted with audacity (gostākhi) and failed to recognize its station, it would lack that light and order.
Regarding the angels, 'And from adab, the angel has arrived innocent and pure.' The core point here relates to the angels' lack of free will. In the Holy Quran, it is stated: 'They do not disobey Allah in what He commands them' (66:6). This absolute, unconditional obedience and lack of transgression is the essence of adab. The angel is ma'sum (innocent, infallible), not because of a struggle against the self or an overcoming of sinful desires, but because the very capacity for sin is absent in them. They are entirely obedience and adab, and for this reason, they remain pure and innocent. Satan, who was not of the angels but of the jinn, displayed audacity and was consequently cast out. This demonstrates that, in Mowlana's view, adab is an inseparable principle of purity and existential perfection.
Thus, adab is both the organizer and illuminator of the cosmic realm, and the guarantor of purity and innocence for noble divine beings. Wherever audacity and disrespect arise, there will be darkness and corruption. This adab, in its broadest sense, is significant not only in the individual sphere but also in social dimensions and even in humanity's interaction with nature. If a society loses adab — meaning the respect for others' rights, care for the needy, and adherence to rules and laws — as Mowlana indicates in preceding verses, divine mercy and blessings will depart, and misfortune and deprivation will take hold. This adab brings success (tovfiq) and ease, while its absence leads to hardship and suffering.
Key takeaways
- Adab (propriety/discipline) is the foundation of cosmic order and radiance, manifesting as beauty and light throughout existence.
- Angels are innocent and pure because they embody absolute adab and obedience to the Divine will, not because they possess the capacity to sin but choose not to.
- The firmament, through its curvature and humility, is a manifestation of cosmic adab and reverence for the order of creation, which bestows upon it light.
- Audacity (gostākhi) and lack of adab are the roots of corruption and deprivation, both individually and socially, whereas adab brings divine grace and accord (tovfiq).
- In Mowlana's view, adab transcends mere courtesy or a simple ethical virtue; it is an existential principle that determines the quality of being.

On je u potpunosti poslušnost i edeb, i zbog toga ostaje čist i bezgrješan.

Reverence (*adab*) is the fundamental principle of cosmic order and beauty, causing the heavens to be radiant and rendering angels pure and infallible.
Rumi presents adab—a term encompassing reverence, discipline, and propriety—not merely as an ethical virtue but as a foundational, cosmic principle. This couplet illustrates that adab is the very source of light and purity in creation.
The firmament, or the celestial sphere, is 'filled with light' because of its adab. This can be understood as its humble submission to the cosmic order. The heavens are not arrogant; their curved, bowing form is a physical manifestation of reverence. This willing acceptance of their place in the divine system is what grants them their radiance. Had the celestial sphere been audacious (gostākhi), like the insolent figures in the preceding story, it would be devoid of its light and order.
Similarly, angels are 'innocent and bright' because of adab. Their purity is not the result of a struggle against temptation, but stems from their very nature, which is one of absolute, unwavering obedience to God's will. As the Qur'an states, they 'do not disobey Allah in what He commands them.' This innate inability to transgress is the highest form of adab, making them intrinsically pure (pāk) and infallible (maʿṣūm). This contrasts sharply with the figure of Azazil (Satan), mentioned in the next line, whose audacity led to his expulsion from grace.
