This couplet states that true gratitude produces spiritual growth, revealing that one blessing (a 'plant') contains the seed of another, greater blessing within it.
This verse is the culmination of a passage celebrating gratitude. Rumi has just used the image of a spring garden where every plant—cypress, lily, rose—is silently giving thanks for the rain that gives it life. This gratitude, he says, is the very mechanism of growth.
The couplet makes two interconnected points. The first half, addressed to the ṣiqāt (the trustworthy companions on the path), directly alludes to the Quranic promise, "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you" (14:7). Gratitude (shukr) is not merely a polite response but a spiritual practice that actively generates more blessings.
The second half explains how this works using the metaphor of a plant within a plant (nabāt... andar nabāt). The word nabāt means both 'plant' and 'sugarcandy/sweetness'. Rumi plays on this dual meaning. The visible blessing is the first 'plant'. The act of giving thanks for it cultivates a second, hidden 'plant'—a deeper spiritual sweetness and insight—which grows within the first. The external gift is a vessel for an internal one, which is only accessed through gratitude.
- Arabic plural of 'thiqa', meaning 'trusted ones, reliable friends, confidants'. Rumi uses it to address his close disciples or sincere readers who can be trusted with deeper spiritual truths.
- A word with a deliberate double meaning here: (1) a plant, vegetation; (2) rock candy, crystallized sugar, or sweetness in general. Rumi's image is of a plant growing inside another plant, and also of a sweetness found within another sweetness.
- Increase, abundance, surplus. In this context, it specifically echoes the Quranic promise that gratitude will be met with an increase in divine blessings.
