The only thing preventing access to the spiritual reality offered by the Masnavi is the human ego's desires and empty cravings; without that obstacle, it is a source of endless spiritual nourishment.
This couplet follows a prayer that the "door" of the Masnavi remain open to all. Rumi immediately identifies the sole obstacle to entering: hawā (caprice, empty passion, literally 'air') and shahwat (carnal appetite, lust). The imagery contrasts this spiritual disease (āfat, 'blight, pestilence') with the cure. The world behind the door is described as shurbat andar shurbat—'sweet drink upon sweet drink'. This evokes an image of endless, delightful, life-giving nourishment. In the context of the Masnavi's re-commencement, this "door" is the book itself, and the "sweet drink" is the wisdom it contains. The problem isn't the availability of grace, but our own internal state that makes us unable to receive it.
The subsequent verses expand on this by pinpointing the physical mouth and its appetites as the 'blinder' to the spiritual world, using Adam's fall from a single taste of selfish desire as the prime example. The obstacle is the lower self; the reward is a boundless divine sweetness.

این بیت در آغاز دفتر دوم مثنوی، پس از وقفهای دو ساله، بیان میشود. مولانا راه معنوی و خودِ مثنوی را به «در»ی تشبیه میکند که به روی همگان گشوده است. اما بلافاصله هشدار میدهد که آفتی بزرگ مانع عبور از این در و بهرهمندی از گنجینههای آن میشود: «هوا و شهوت».
«هوا» در اصطلاح عرفانی، به معنای امیال و هوسهای نفسانی و خودمحورانه است که انسان را از حقیقت دور میکند. «شهوت» نیز به معنای عامتر، هر نوع خواستهی شدید و کنترلنشدهی نفس است، نه فقط تمایلات جنسی. این دو، حجاب و مانعی هستند که اجازه نمیدهند سالک طعم شیرین حقیقت را بچشد.
در مقابل این آفت، مولانا تصویری دلنشین قرار میدهد: «شربت اندر شربت». این تعبیر کنایه از لذتهای معنوی پیاپی، معارف گوارا و تجربیات روحانی بیپایانی است که در این راه وجود دارد. پیام اصلی این است که راه حق در ذات خود تلخ و دشوار نیست؛ آنچه آن را سخت و بیثمر میکند، آلودگیهای درونی خود ماست. اگر انسان بتواند دهان خود را از این خواستههای نفسانی ببندد، چشمان باطنش برای دیدن حقایق آن جهان باز خواهد شد، همانطور که در ابیات بعدی توضیح داده میشود.
