The Beginning
For a time, this Masnavi was delayed;a pause was needed for the blood to turn to milk. The composition of the Masnavi was paused for a period, allowing time for a natural process of maturation to take place, like blood transforming into nourishing milk. ❋
Until your fortune gives birth to a new child, blood will not turn to sweet milk—listen well! This couplet explains that a period of patient waiting and inner transformation is necessary for inspiration to mature, just as blood must transform into milk in the womb before a birth can occur.
When Ziya al-Haqq, Husam al-Din, turned the reinsback from the zenith of the heavens,The composition of the Masnavi resumed when Husam al-Din returned from a profound spiritual state that had temporarily taken him away.
Since he had journeyed on the Ascension of Realities, without his springtime, the flowerbuds remained unblossomed.Because Rumi's patron and muse, Husam al-Din, was absorbed in a profound spiritual state, the inspiration for the Masnavi's poetry (the 'flowerbuds') could not emerge.
When from the sea he turned back to the shore, the harp of the Masnavi's song was tuned once more. When Husam al-Din returned from his spiritual absorption to worldly engagement, Rumi's inspiration to compose the Masnavi was rekindled.
The Masnavi, which is a burnisher for the soul, its resumption was a day of auspicious opening. The recommencement of the Masnavi, a work that polishes the human spirit, was itself a blessed and celebratory new beginning. ❋
The starting date of this commerce and gain,Was the year six hundred and sixty-two.Rumi explicitly records the date when the composition of the second book of the Masnavi began: the Islamic year 662 AH. ❋
A nightingale took flight from here, and then returned; To hunt these hidden meanings, as a falcon it returned. After a period of spiritual withdrawal, the disciple and muse has come back to the world, transformed from a singing bird of longing into a royal bird of prey ready to capture divine truths.
May the King's forearm be this falcon's home;may this door stay open for all who come. This couplet is a prayer that Rumi's inspiration (the falcon) will always find its perch on his patron, Husam al-Din (the King's arm), so that the spiritual teachings of the Masnavi (this door) remain accessible to humanity forever.
The blight upon this door is selfish passion and hot air;otherwise, this place is sweet drink poured on sweet drink. The only thing preventing access to the spiritual reality offered by the Masnavi is the human ego's desires and empty cravings; without that obstacle, it is a source of endless spiritual nourishment.
Close this mouth of yours, that you may clearly see:the blindfold to that world is throat and mouth. To perceive the spiritual world, you must silence your physical appetites for food and speech, as they obscure your inner vision.
O mouth, you are the very mouth of Hell!O world, you are a likeness of the Liminal!Your physical mouth, driven by appetite, is a gateway to damnation, and this sensory world you inhabit is a dangerous, in-between state separating you from Reality.
Enduring Light beside this lowly world,Pure milk beside these rivers of blood. The eternal, spiritual reality exists right alongside the base, corrupt material world, just as pure milk might flow next to a stream of blood.
When you take one reckless step into that place, your milk turns into blood from the mingling. In the treacherous landscape of the world, a single careless act of indulgence can corrupt your pure spiritual nature.
One step Adam took for the pleasure of the self, and severance from Paradise became his soul's yoke. This couplet uses the story of Adam to illustrate a universal spiritual principle: a single act driven by the lower self's desire results in a painful separation from one's original, exalted state.
The angel fled from him as from a demon;for a few morsels of bread, he shed a flood of tears.Adam's single act of disobedience made him so wretched that even angels recoiled from him, and he wept bitterly over the worldly desire that caused his fall.
Though the sin he committed was but a single hair, that hair had sprouted inside his two eyes.Adam's single act of disobedience, though seemingly small, was catastrophic because it directly obscured his spiritual vision.
Adam was the eye of the Ancient Light;a hair in the eye is a mighty mountain.Because Adam's spiritual station was so high and pure, even the smallest sin had a colossal, blinding effect, just as a single hair can block the vision of an eye.
Had Adam, in that moment, taken counsel,he would not have pleaded for pardon in his shame. This couplet uses the story of Adam to argue that consulting with a wise companion—a spiritual friend or guide—prevents the kind of disastrous error that leads to regret.
For when one intellect is joined with another,it becomes a barrier to evil deeds and evil words. When you consult with a wise person, their reason combined with yours prevents you from acting or speaking wrongly.
When one carnal soul becomes the other's friend, the partial intellect is idled, brought to an end. When two people's lower selves (nafs) conspire together, their individual, worldly intelligence becomes completely useless for discerning right from wrong.
When you despair in your solitude, you become a sun beneath a friend's shade.Loneliness leads to despair, but the company and protection of a true spiritual friend can transform you, making you radiant and life-giving like the sun.
Go, seek a friend of God, and do it soon. When you have done so, God will be your friend. You must urgently seek out a spiritual guide or a true friend on the path, because finding such a companion is the very means by which you find God's companionship.
Even one who in solitude has fixed his gaze, ultimately learned that very art from a Friend.Even the spiritual practice of solitary contemplation is something one must first learn from a true spiritual guide or friend. ❋
Solitude is from strangers, not from the Friend;a fur coat is for winter, not for the spring.Spiritual retreat is meant to separate you from distracting influences, not from a true spiritual companion who is essential for your growth. ❋
One intellect joined with another becomes two;the light increases, and the path becomes clear. When two wise people consult with each other, their combined insight doubles, illuminating the right way forward.
When one base self delights in another, darkness deepens and the Way is hidden. When two people's egos ally, they may find pleasure in it, but the result is spiritual confusion and the loss of the true path.
The friend is your eye, O man of the hunt;keep it clear of all the twigs and the dust.Your spiritual companion is the very organ through which you see reality, so you must protect that relationship from any impurity or offense that could cloud your vision.
Beware! Do not raise dust with the broom of your tongue,Do not give your eye a gift of grit and grime.Be careful with your words around a spiritual friend, as careless speech can damage the relationship, clouding the clarity it provides.
Since the believer is the believer’s mirror, his face is kept secure from any stain.A true spiritual friend acts as a mirror, reflecting your spiritual state back to you so clearly that you can keep yourself pure from faults.
